Calais Vins and Olivier Vins Take It Out on Bordeaux

Six goals to four. In Miami. Against England. In a match that decided precisely nothing except who gets to feel slightly better about not reaching the final.

It has taken Calais Vins and Olivier Vins, the two wine superstores just across the Channel from Dover, a few days to process the scoreline from the 18 July World Cup third-place match. Rather than sulk about it quietly, the two shops wanted to mark the moment with a nod to their most loyal customers: the thousands of British holidaymakers who pass through Calais every summer on their way south. The 6-4 Return Match is the least they could do.

The 6-4 Return Match does exactly what it says on the tin: British customers who select one of six Bordeaux reds, can take six bottles of it, and pay for just four. A massive 33% saving, and a bottle-for-bottle tribute to the number that has been rattling around Calais and Fréthun since Saturday.

“We could have just sent a thank-you card,” says Jérôme Pont, co-founder of Calais Vins. “Instead we chose to relive the exact scoreline in wine form. It is not the most dignified way to thank our British customers. It is, however, the one available to us.”

Olivier Vermisse, of Olivier Vins et Compagnie, is similarly unrepentant. “England had the better afternoon. We are French, so naturally we are taking it out on Bordeaux. Six bottles, four paid. If Kylian Mbappé can become the tournament’s all-time top scorer and still finish fourth, we can survive a bad Saturday and still sell wine.”

The six wines are drawn from Médoc, Saint-Émilion, Margaux, Saint-Estèphe, and Pauillac, ranging from an everyday Fonrose Médoc to a Grand Cru Château Patris. Customers choose one wine per bundle rather than mixing across the range, though several different bundles can be combined in a single visit.

Should the France squad ever find themselves passing through Calais, Jérôme Pont confirms the offer will run in reverse: buy four, pay for six. “Even the best striker in the world doesn’t win every match,” he adds. “We’re French. We know a thing or two about that.”

The 6-4 Return Match offer runs until 30 September 2026.

The offer is in-store only, at both Calais Vins and Olivier Vins et Compagnie, and can be stacked with the shops’ existing VAT refund partnerships with Global Blue and Skiptax, worth a further 15% to British customers on their way home. With Global Blue simply collect your Tax-Free Form from the store. Scan the bar code on the form at the kiosks located at the PABLO terminal in the ferry port. Located in the main building after the customs. Or in the passenger building for Eurotunnel.

UK Duty free allowances:

• beer – 42 litres
• wine (not sparkling) – 18 litres
• spirits and other liquors over 22% alcohol – 4 litres
• fortified wine (for example port, sherry), sparkling wine and alcoholic drinks up to 22% alcohol – 9 litres

You can split this last allowance, for example you could bring 4.5 litres of fortified wine and 2 litres of spirits (both half of your allowance).
